Romance During Ovulation

So, this was the week that we were going to test out our new 'timing plan'. But of course things never go as planned.

Last week the doctor asked me, on average, how long my cycle is. 31 days says my handy-dandy iPhone app. Sometimes more, sometimes less. What this tells the doc is that my day of ovulation occurs, on average, on day 17 or 18. So, our new 'timing plan' was to not have sex past day 10, and then try on days 15, 16, and 17 in hopes that this would allow gender specific reproductive cells to meet in the correct location at the correct time. Romantic, eh?! Welcome to the land of 'Trying To Get Pregnant!' (A little background for those who have not had to do the research or ask these questions; healthy sperm in the right environment can live anywhere from 3-5 days, whereas an egg will be viable 12-24 hours after ovulation. Talk about the stars aligning!)

But, nooooo, not this month. I get the big ol smiley face on day 15. (More background to catch you up to speed; when you get the smiley face on your OPK (ovulation prediction kit) test stick your body is having an LH (luteinizing hormone) surge. And an LH surge triggers ovulation, which lets you know that you are most fertile that day and the following day. Now, along with the OPK's, you can monitor your BBT (basal body temperature) and CM (cervical mucus) to track fertility.)

This news has royally screwed up our new plan of attack. Instead, we are forced to use what I like to call the 'flooding technique'. Sex the night you get your smiley face, the next morning and the next night. This is not a technique that I favor nor have the energy for most months.

On the upside, I got a call from my doctor's office letting me know that my cystic fibrosis test came back negative. Yippee! I'll take any answers at this point.

And so begins the 2WW (two week wait), again. Get on board people, the acronyms are abundant in the fertility community.

Here's to hoping that this is our month! (After all, October worked for us last year.)
